According to the latest Radio Advertising Bureau stats, Radio reaches 90.8% of Persons 12 and older each week. That's no surprise to us! Radio is always there with us; at work, in the car, and online streaming. With Radio's large reach, it makes sense that it should be a large part of your marketing plan. But how do you make Radio work for your business? I've outlined a few simple tips to help!
It's all about the message!
With smart ads, you’ll reach customers and increase your sales through Radio. (src: VoiceBunny) But what are the essentials to a great audio-only ad? How do you convey the right message? More importantly, how do you get them to act when they’re nowhere near a computer or a pen and paper?
Don’t waste time with boring introductions or verbose explanations. Get straight to the point and start hammering the benefits of your business. Try adding an endearing jingle or a funny story or dialogue to keep the audience listening along. Also, avoid confusing the listeners with complicated words or sentence structures.
A Simple and Strong Call-To-Action (CTA)
Ask yourself: What is the one thing you want them to do at the end of the commercial?
Visit your website? Call a phone number? Visit your store? Whatever it is, make it crystal clear to your audience.
Then, keep it simple, silly. Unlike explainer videos on websites or squeeze pages, radio listeners can’t click on a button while driving in a car or listening to through headphones while on a treadmill.
Always, always, always give a call to action!
Entertain the Audience
Entrepreneur.com agrees that Great radio spots grab and hold attention, usually through humor (see above, Start Strong). They may also use sounds, compelling music or unusual voices to grab attention. Your spots must tell stories or present situations your target audience can relate to. To keep your audience listening to your spots month after month, make them part of an ongoing campaign theme. Your audience will listen for the newest versions, helping extend your message more successfully than if you were to run unrelated spots. For maximum results, make your call to action--a URL or phone number--easy to remember and tie it in with your company name or message.
Always Be Testing
Test your radio ad campaign over and over again and see what works. A simple way is to create two radio ads with different introductions, scripts, or call-to-actions and air one ad 50% of the time and air the other ad 50% of the time. Then, each commercial will funnel their listeners to a separate URL or phone number.Collect the data for a few weeks or even months, analyze which ad outperformed the other and go with the winner. You can continue testing your winning ad, trying different introductions or call-to-actions and, soon, you may have an ad that converts over 300% better than your first version.

That's why top-of-mind awareness is so important. You need to stay at the top of consumers consciousness. That way when they need you and have the funds to splurge, they automatically think of you. Then, they splurge with you!
But how do you obtain top-of-mind awareness? The key frequency and reach. How often are you sending out your message to potential customers? How many potential customers are you reaching with each message? Are you using the proper channels to reach your target customer?
Let's look a national brand, for example; Coke. Coca-cola is and remains the top soft drink in America, even with the segmentation of the market in recent years. Yet, they still advertise. During the Great Recession, they continued to advertise. Why? To stay in front of their consumers. Because they knew if they slacked off and let some pretty new shiny cola swoop in and woo (Yes, I said "woo". It is almost Valentine's Day!) them, and gain top-of-mind awareness Coca-cola could very well lose their market share. So, they continue to advertise and continue to stay on top!
Now you're not Coca-cola. We know that. But the same principles apply, whether you have 3,000 locations or are just getting started. Staying at the top of your customers and potential customers conscious is the key!

In reality, AM/FM’s audience share is 9X Pandora and 17X that of Spotify. - Nielsen data also shows that radio reaches 93% of Millennials – 22% more Millennials than TV. TV misses one in four Millennials."

This project is near and dear to our hearts because ACH does so many things to help the children of Arkansas. No family is ever turned away. Treatment comes first at ACH. They know that when a child is at ACH, the last thing a family needs to worry about is how they're going to pay for treatment. And, unfortunately, many Arkansas families cannot cover the cost of the type of lifesaving treatments that ACH provides. As a result, Arkansas Children's Hospital relies on donations and events, like our Radiothon, to help generate the funds needed to continue to provide the medical treatment that many Arkansas children would otherwise have to go without.
